DIPG is a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. DMG is a diffuse midline glioma. Both are particularly aggressive brain tumors typically found in children and young adults.
The cause of DIPG or DMG is not known to be hereditary or environmentally influenced. There is nothing a parent did or did not do that caused DIPG or DMG to occur in their child.
The lifespan for patients with DIPG or DMG varies. Radiation has been shown to improve quality and quantity of life for some but not all. Experimental trials are continuously being initiated in the hopes of prolonging survival.
Gliomas are classified by cell type, grade and location. DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) is one particular type of glioma. Understanding the histone mutation is a key aspect of determining treatment options.
